According to the collective agreement for university employees, university professors are entitled to a leave of absence from work for teaching or research purposes of up to six months after seven years of uninterrupted employment at the university. Since universities are corporations under public law, salaries that (partially) continue to be paid during such a semester or study leave remain taxable in Austria due to Austrian tax treaty policy.
