1. Forms of employment in the modern world of work
The forms of work already described also cover the many forms of employment in the ‘modern’ world of work. Examples of ‘modern’ work include telework (work performed at a freely chosen location using modern information and communication technologies), job sharing (two employees share a workplace, whereby they coordinate performance between them so that it is always covered at the specified time), freelancing (working independently and on temporary contracts rather than for a long-term employer) or platform work (individual work tasks that are offered to a large number of potential service providers, the crowd, via an internet platform). In all of these examples, the extent to which employment in personal dependence is exercised must be examined. If one or more characteristics of an employment contract are missing, other legal relationships – such as a free service contract or a contract for services – must be considered.
